 | The Capital City Kiwanis Club was founded in October 1954. Active
member T. Bowen Hill was the club's first president and served two
years. |
 | The Club's membership averages 110 annually with approximately 60
attending each Monday meeting. |
 | The Club has only one fund-raising project each year. The Blue-Gray
Basketball Classic, held for many years at Sidney Lanier High
School, is now held the week before Christmas at Jefferson Davis High
School. |
 | Proceeds from the Blue-Gray tournament (annually approximately
$15,000) are distributed to organizations approved by the Major
Emphasis Committee and the Board of Directors. |
 | The club is governed by a board
of eight directors and the club's elected officers. Seven directors
are elected to staggered, two-year terms. The immediate past president
also serves as a director. |
 | Officers include the president, two vice presidents, secretary and
treasurer. |
 | The president, first vice president and second vice president serve
one-year terms. The treasurer and secretary may serve multiple,
consecutive years. |
 | The first vice president is president-elect, chairs the Blue-Gray
project and directs meetings in the absence of the president. |
 | The second vice president is charged with the arranging weekly
speaker programs and ascends to the first vice president position upon
completion of the one-year term. |
 | Dues are billed and paid quarterly or annually at the discretion of
the member. Additionally, a 20 cents per years of age assessment is
levied annually to fund the Scholarship Fund. |
 | The club awards two $2,000 scholarships
to deserving local high school seniors. They are the Smith-Poundstone
Needs-based Scholarship and the Charles M. Read Merit Scholarship. |
 | The Doc Burke Award is presented annually to the member giving
outstanding service to the club. |
 | The board meets monthly with one board member serving as host to a
lunch or dinner meeting. |
 | The Club sponsors a Circle K Club at Huntingdon College and a Key
Club at St. James School. |
 | Capital City Kiwanis works closely with the Montgomery Boys and
Girls Clubs on two annual projects, a bicycle rodeo and Kiwanis
Olympics field day. |
 | Young
Children Priority One is the focus provided by Kiwanis
International. |
