Reading is Fundamental (RIF)
Our club and many Alabama District clubs participate in and
contribute to the RIF program. But did you know:
As of May 2004, the program provided 250,000 at-risk young
children with 750,000 books to enjoy at home.
The value of the books plus the value of Kiwanians &
friends of Kiwanis reading amounted to an in-kind contribution
of more than $6 million to the sites served.
This in turn justified an additional $24 million in grants to
provide additional benefits to poor children & their
families.
For many of the children served, the books received through
RIF are the first and only book in their homes
When Kiwanians and those assisting in tthe program complete
reading a book to the children, we have a book for each child
and their name is written inside the front cover. This becomes
their personal book and we hope parents, grandparents, brothers
& sisters will read this book to them at home.
This information taken from the article in the February 2005
issue of Kiwanis Magazine.
This program encourages and assists Headstart children learn to
read. The club purchases books which are given to the children.
The reading schedule this year is: February 20, February 27, April 23 and April 30.
Our
headstart centers are: Jeff Davis Headstart Center at 515 West
Jeff Davis Avenue and Trinity Headstart Center at 1104 Rosa L.
